Nurturing Your Family's Garden: Focusing on the Fundamentals
When a lovely young couple in Cheltenham, expecting their second child, asked me to help with their garden, it was clear they needed a space that worked better for their growing family. The garden had become a bit neglected over time – an uneven lawn, a rotting fence, and a patio far too small for enjoying meals or relaxing together. On top of that, a large, old shed seemed to swallow up most of the space.
The goal was simple: to create a practical, welcoming garden that would be easy to look after and a joy to spend time in.
Bringing the Garden Back to Life
1. Adding Privacy with a Fresh Fence A sturdy wooden fence was a must for privacy and security. I gave it a modern look by painting it a sleek grey, which really brightened up the whole space and gave the garden a stylish feel.
2. Level and Smooth To make the garden safer and easier to manage, I levelled the ground completely and improved drainage. Uneven lawns can become tricky for older family members or little ones, so this was an important step.
3. A Shed That Fits The old shed was far too big for the space, so I replaced it with a smaller, more practical version. It’s the perfect size for storing tools, toys, and anything else the family might need.
4. A Patio Made for Family Time The patio was extended and resurfaced with fresh, stylish slabs, creating a practical area for relaxing, dining, or enjoying a barbecue. It’s now a space the family can use together – whatever the season.
5. Safe and Easy Play Spaces I created a soft, bark-covered area for the children to play, alongside a durable, low-maintenance lawn. The family chose artificial grass, which is a great option for stress-free garden care – perfect for families, as it can handle children, pets, and all types of weather without much fuss.
Of course, there are some things to consider with artificial grass, as it doesn’t support bees and other pollinators. If you’re unsure what’s best for your garden, I’d be happy to talk you through low-maintenance natural grass options or eco-friendly alternatives that work for you.
6. A Garden for All Seasons To make the space enjoyable year-round, I added a pergola with blinds, lighting, and a heater. Now the family can sit outside, relax, or entertain guests – whatever the weather.
The Result: A Calm, Easy-to-Manage Garden
The transformation was just what the family had hoped for. The grey-painted fence adds privacy and gives the garden a fresh, modern look. The smooth, level lawn flows seamlessly into the patio and new shed, making the whole space feel bigger and more open.
Two lovely teal pots, each holding a neat bay tree, frame the patio beautifully and bring a touch of greenery to the space. The new patio is now the heart of the garden – a perfect spot for family meals, morning cups of tea, or a sunny afternoon with a good book.
Even though the couple aren’t keen gardeners, they can still enjoy bursts of colour with container plants or flowers throughout the year – whatever appeals to them in the moment.
